Practical plan and project. Please read it over even if it is difficult to grasp, and you may join this worldwide movement if you are interested in. The contents will be updated soon. I am willing to meet any New Buddhists in America. e-mail reply: kaylahan@hotmail.com newbuddhism@yahoo.com reformbuddhism@yahoo.com Sincerely yours, With Loving Kindness, Bhante |

Hello,
I am new to this website and new to Buddhist knowledge. The reason why I searched for such a site is because my HUM 127 Religions of the Worlds college course, requires that I find a religion that I would consider based on our readings and describe in detail what it's all about. My interest is in the Lotus Sutra because from what I understand of it, it gives the individual total power over their spiritual or religious experiences, rather than follow someone else's opinion or ideas. Am I correct on this assumptions. Please respond to my reply, since I don't have much time to consider the different religions here and the Lotus Sutra was the only one that caught my attention. Thank you. |

Dear Maria,
Any sutra is outside object. Not your inner self. Before faith only, instead of believing in the Buddhist sutra, please reconsider why I have to believe in this lotus sutra. Check the origin. Do not believe all the sayings of Lotus sutra letters by letters. It is one of the Mahayana sutras. It is fictitious masterpiece. Benefit of doubt will help Buddhist. |

There are many questions i have that books cant seem to answer in words, and i think i would ave more understanding if someone could explain. Anyway, im 18 and my parents and family are all very christian. I dont have much support at home and am seeking it through other places. If anyone has any advice, i'd appreciate it. Question about the New Buddhism Movement...
I havent really found that the Sangha I belong to, or the Buddhism I practice is outside of modern times. Why create a "New Buddhism" movement? I guess it may be different in other countries, but in the U.S., it seems to me that Buddhism is about as modern as it can get. But I guess I have heard that it's different in other countries where cultural aspects (supersitions, magic, etc) have crept into the religion? Anyway, I guess I just dont understand how Buddhism is not modern as it is. Sharon |

Also, to the person who wants to learn more about Buddhism, I'd suggest reading stuff on Buddhanet.net. It has a directory of communities/Sanghas in there, for any part of the world that you live in. There are sangha's all over the U.S. (although many are small...like seeds, and some may not be as good as others, but who knows.) I belong to the Rochester Zen Center Sangha, which is one of the oldest Zen Sangha's in the U.S / (founded in 1966). Also, there are many different varities of Buddhism, so if one doesn't fit your tempermeant, check out the others.
Also, they have a lot of really good books out there on the dharma. I'm sure know that though! There are also magazines (you can find them at vegaterian/vegan stories, usually. Or you can get them online...). There is Buddhadarma, and (the most well known) is Tricyle. There is also Shambhala Sun. Those are the most well known, and they tend to cover all traditions of Buddhism rather than just one. They also have interviews with well known teachers, or scholars in American Buddhism. Good luck on learning about the Dharma! I hope this helps. |

Hello, To this person, ok, I'm not sure why the person who created this thread hasn't answered, (and I'm not all that qualified to answer), but, as far as I know, the Lotus Sutra is one of the most well known sutras in Mahayana Buddhism. I dont know what you mean by giving someone power over there spirtual development though? It's a sutra, so .... I dont know if you mean giving you power by chanting it or something? It's an odd question?? All I know is, the Lotus Sutra is considered to be one of the most well known sutras in Mahayana Buddhism. In Zen Buddhism, we dont chant it as if it's a magical prayer or something, but we understand that theres great wisdom in it and so we may study it and chant it to understand it's greater meaning. Anyway, maybe thats why it wasn't answered, because nobody is sure about what you meant? |

Are those monk/nun robes? Ahh, I can't find your article on what the New Buddhism movement is, so you probably havent made it yet. Maybe its like engaged Buddhism or something?? (sorry for making assumptions about what it is in the last message! I should ask, what is it, before I make assumptions. Not very "Buddhist" of me.... heh.) Anyway, How is Nepal? Isn't there a civil war going on there? (I'd love to go to Nepal, except for the civil war thing... not exactly very safe right now. :(....) Are you studying with the Tibetan Buddhist's over there, or another tradition? Sharon |
